THE CHALDEAN CHURCH
IN THE IRAQI TEMPEST

            The Chaldean Church of the East, with her Assyrian segment as well, has seen all kinds of hardship through her millennial history. This is the only apostolic church that has never had a Christian king or ruler and never was within the boundaries of a Christian Empire or state. Nevertheless, she survived with unique spiritual splendor and achievement. In the present era, she is facing brutal attacks and pressures of the worst kind, which she experiences while living as a flock of sheep between the wolves of this world. 

            What is being done today to her could be likened to what happened during the years of the Persian persecution (A.D. 340-379). At that historical junction, fundamentalist Zoroastrians chastised Christians--flock and leaders--burning churches, executing faithful, and imposing additional taxes. At the present time, fundamentalist Muslims are pursuing similar policies and deeds in Iraq.

            But humanity at our age cannot pretend to ignore or stand idle in view of a systematic cleansing of the Christian people, who have every right to enjoy living in their ancestral land and who, despite all the hardship that they endured for many centuries under Moslem rulers in Iraq, were always and consistently loyal to their country and state. Is what happened in Iraq in the past few decades, particularly lately, an issue that can be ignored by the civilized world?

            At this point, impressions and attitudes of good-will cannot suffice. Already half of Baghdad’s Christian communities have fled the capital; Basra is almost emptied of an ancient vibrant Christian presence; already, eight priests have been kidnapped. Except Kurdistan and the adjacent plain of Nineveh, nowhere is safe for Christians to be in Iraq.  Time is past due for concrete measures.

            In the fourth century, a lenient king and an international intervention brought peace and justice to the Church of the East. Most of all, in our opinion, Chaldean Church hierarchy and the civil representatives of its people must formulate their proposals for a viable solution in regard to the prospect of a peaceful and prosperous future for their people and Church.

Convocation of a Holy Synod
His Beatitude Mar Emmanuel III Delly convoked a Synod of the Chaldean Church from June 1-7, 2007 in the North of Iraq. Our Bishop, Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo, left the Diocese to attend the meeting of the Chaldean Hierarchs at this critical moment in the history of our Church and people. May our prayers be with him and all the other hierarchs.

Workers of the Vineyard 

A New Altar and A New Beginning

As the first public unveiling of the new Diocesan
Association called Workers of the Vineyard, Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo of the Chaldean Eparchy of St. Peter the Apostle presided over a ceremony at the new "Convent of Our Lady of the Fields" in El Cajon, CA. The ceremony began at 9 AM on Saturday May 12, 2007, during which the bishop consecrated the altar and chapel of the new convent, and celebrated Mass for the intention of the three Chaldean young ladies who will be the founding members of the Movement: Leena Somo, Reem Salman and Rana Raban. In addition to the three women, there were four priests in attendance and over thirty lay faithful who were invited to share in the joy of the occasion.

Ceremony of Promises 

In the evening of the
Commemoration of Our Lady of the Fields, Tuesday May 15, 2007 at St. Peter Chaldean Cathedral, His Excellency Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo accepted the temporary promises of Leena, Reem, and Rana, during a Mass he celebrated in the presence of Mar Bawai Soro and three of his priests who came from San Jose especially for the occasion, as well as Fr. Noel Gorgis, pastor of St. Paul Assyrian Chaldean Church in North Hollywood, who also traveled to San Diego with several
parishioners, and other Chaldean clergy and hundreds of
faithful. The atmosphere was jubilant and the hearts of those who attended were in high spirits, especially the three candidates and their families, some of whom had flown in from as far as Michigan. After the Mass there was a reception in the Hall of St. Peter Church.

The Workers of the Vineyard will serve the Chaldean Diocese of St. Peter the Apostle as they continue their education and training in the Aramaic language and the theological patrimony of the Church of the East. We pray for Leena, Reem and Rana, who began this new chapter in their life, that our Lord may fill their hearts with his graces through his mother, Our Lady of the Fields.

تكـريـس الـذات لثـلاثٍ مـن فتـياتـنا الكـلدانيـات

اُقيمت في كاتدرائية مار بطرس الكلدانية في سان دييگو مساء الثلاثاء 15 آيار2007، عيد سيدتنا العذراء حافظة الزروع، مراسيم تقديم وعود الابتداء ومنح بركة القارئ وتكريس الذات لثلاث فتيات كلدانيات من رعايانا ( لينا صومو، ريم سلمان، ورنا ربان ) تأسيساً لجمعية "فعلة الكرم"،  الجديدة في أبرشيتنا، لتكون في خدمة ابناء الرعية لاسيما في حقول التربية والتنشئة الدينية. أقام راعي ابرشيتنا مار سرهد يوسپ جمو الذبيحة الألهية وبحضور سيادة المطران مار باوَي سورو الذي قدِم خصيصاً من سان هوزيه لحضور هذا الحفل مع ثلاثة من كهنة ابرشيته، كذلك شارك في الأحتفال الأب نوئيل گورگيس قادماً من لوس انجلوس مع عدد من ابناء رعيته من  كنيسة مار بولس للاثوريين والكلدان في نورث هوليوود. بالأضافة الى الكهنة الأفاضل: الأب ميخائيل بزي، الأب صبري قجبو، الأب بولس خمي، الأب اندرو يونان، والأب عماد الشيخ، ولفيف الشمامسة، وجوق الأنشاد، وكافة الأخويات مع مئات المؤمنين الذين خرجوا من الكنيسة بالزياح منطلقين نحو قاعة الكنيسة لتهنئة الفتيات الثلاث وعوائلهن.

هذا وكان مُسبقاً قد تمّ يوم السبت 12 آيار 2007 تقديس المذبح الجديد للدار التي ستسكنها فتيات ”فعلة الكرم“ الثلاث الذي أطلق عليه اسم ”دير حافظة الزروع“.

ألف مبروك لفعـلة الكرم، وليباركهن الرب بشفاعة سيدتنا العذراء حافظة الزروع، وينمّي هذه الحركة الجديدة في ابرشيتنا.

volunteer teachers were invited to attend a small party at Peter Piper Pizza Restaurant to appreciate their efforts in serving their church. We wish them a safe and joyful summer•

Breath of life Youth Group Visits the NEW Convent

The Breath of Life Youth Group of St. Peter’s Chaldean Cathedral had very eventful Saturday , May 26, 2007, while visiting the Workers of the Vineyard Convent (see pg 2). Preceded by the Rosary, the group had a beautiful and intimate time in adoration while meditating and reflecting on our lovely Chaldean hymns. Moreover, Rana Raban told a very touching story of how the youth group was originally created, and asked the youth to share their thoughts and experiences while being a part of the group. Finally, after an hour of prayer and recollection, the Workers of the Vineyard hosted a laid-back and pleasant gathering with food, laughter and fun. Since the events were such a success, Breath of Life will be having monthly visits at the convent throughout the summer, with different programs and activities•

يُعلن الموسيقار العراقي الكلداني القادم من أرض الوطن لؤي حبيب عازف آلة الكمان (ڨايلين Violin )، والذي يقود حالياً جوقتي الأنشاد لكنيستي مار بطرس ومار ميخا الكلدانيتين، عن افتتاح دورة موسيقية لجميع الاعمار في كاتدرائية مار بطرس في سان دييگو يومي الأثنين والثلاثاء الساعة 5 مساءً (او بأوقات اخرى يُتفق عليها). تتخلل الدورة:
● اعطاء دروس فنية وتعليمية للعزف على آلة الكَمان. 
● اعطاء دروس لقراءة النوطة الموسيقية (الحروف الموسيقية).

المهرجان الاول  لكنيسة مارت مريم في سان هوزيه

بعد القداس الالهي، يوم الاحد السادس من ايار 2007/ الشهر المريمي / اقامت كنيسة مارت مريم في سان هوزيه/كاليفورنيا، مهرجانا كبيرا تضمن عدة نشاطات من رقصات فولكلورية واكلات شعبية والعاب للصغار والكبار واغاني شعبية من الدي جي، بالاضافة الى سوق احتوى على الحاجيات المستخدمة في المطابخ الشرقية وغيرها من النشاطات التي شغلت الزوار لساعات طويلة بين الساعة العاشرة صباحا والسابعة مساءً. من الملفت للنظر هو الاشتراك الكثيف من مختلف الشرائح الاجتماعية /اعضاء الكنيسة والكنائس الأخرى من ابناء شعبنا القادمين من العراق وايران وغيرها، بالأضافة الى الزوار من سكان المنطقة والمناطق المجاورة / وجميعهم  تمتعوا باوقات جميلة  بهذا اليوم الرائع وابدوا اعجابهم بما شاهدوه.

الذكرى السادسة لتأسيس كنيسة مارگورگيس الكلدانية

الاب اندراوس توما الراهب

"هذا هو اليوم الذي صنعه الرب، فلنفرح ولنتهلل به".

بهذه الكلمات ابتدأت حفلة العشاء والشكر مساء يوم السبت 26 آيار2007، بمناسبة مرور 6 سنوات على افتتاح كنيستنا كنيسة مار گورگيس الكلدانية في اورنج كاونتي.

وقد حضر الاحتفال مشكوراً راعي ابرشيتنا مار سرهد يوسپ جمّو، والقس برجو(اوراها) قرداغ منصور، وعدد كبير من أبناء الكنيسة. ألقى بعض الأعضاء كلمات بهذه المناسبة، بدأها عريف الحفل ومغنينا العزيز (ايزك ايزك)، ثـم تلته الأخت جينا ميخائيل، فالسيد سعيد جولاغ الذي قرأ شعراً بالمناسبة، بعده كلمة السيد امير رفو اوضح من خلالها كيف تمّ جمع المبالغ لتسديد الدين المتبقي على الكنيسة وذلك بمساعدة الأعضاء الذين قدّموا مشكورين قروضاً مالية لكنيستهم بدون فوائد.

هذا وألقى راعي الكنيسة الأب اندراوس كلمته بالمناسبة، معبّراً عن سعادته بحضور راعي ابرشيتنا، الذي تفضّل بدوره بالقاء كلمة وضّح من خلالها المشاريع المهمة التي يسعى في انجازها لخدمة الرعية. لنصلِّ الى الرب ان يقوّي مساعيه في جميع مشاريعه الروحية والثقافية البناءة. 

أشكر جميع اعضاء الكنيسة على تعاونهم المستمر مع بعضهم، واطلب من الباري عزّ وجل ان يُمطر بركاته عليهم ليسعوا في بناء كنيستهم نحو الأفضل، والرب يبارك اعمالهم الواحد بثلاثين وستين ومئة.

الآب و الأب

بمناسبة عيد الأب...                                                               بقلم: الأب بولس خمي

ان كلمة الآب الممدودة الألف (آ) لا تُطلق سوى على اللـه الآب السماوي الأزلي، الأبدي والواجب الوجود، وهو الذي ليس لأبوته حدود لانه أبُ كلِ المبروآت من العدم مما يُرى وما لا يرى، فهو الألف والياء، الآب القدوس الذي لا ولم يسبقه شيء في الوجود، فهو العلة الاولى للكون. والخير الأول والأبدي للخليقة جمعاء. ولا تبطُل ولا تنتهي او تزول ابوتهُ او يأتي زمن لا يكون فيه اباً ازلياً وابدياً.

     أما الأب، بالهمزة على الألف (أ)، تنتهي ابوته بأنتهاء حياته الأرضية على حدّ قول يسوع لا تدعوا لكم أباً على الأرض، لان اباكم السماوي واحد (يوحنا 8/41 ومتى 23/8) فالأب الارضي يكون قد إكتسب ابوته بانجاب نسل ارضي. أما في العالم الروحي، فيكون الجميع ابناء لأبٍ واحد، حيث يكونون كالملائكة خرافاً كانوا ام جداء (متى 25/33). اما نداءُ الغني لابينا ابراهيم (يا ابي ابراهيم)، قد دعاهُ اباه مَجازِياً من منطلق روحي وككبير القوم، وليس لانه ابوه بالجسد.   

فمن هذا المنطلق نتكلم بفرصة عيد الأب عن صفاته والتي يشترك بها من جانب ما مع اللـه الآب والخالق والمربّي.

لقد مرّ قبل شهر عيد الأم... أُمنا جميعاً ذات الدور والمكانة المرموقة في البيت والعائلة والمجتمع والتي تُكّوِنْ نصفه، فليست المرأة الكثيرة البنين اماً، ما لم تُحسن تربيتهم. فالعذراء مريم هي انموذج نماذج الامهات، كما والقديسات اليصابات، ومسكنتا، ومارت شموني، وجانا التي اعلن قداستها البابا يوحنا بولس الثاني الراحل. وعلى الأم يتوقف عبء تربية الاولاد بنسبة ثلثين بالاشتراك مع الرجل الأب. فإن نُعتت "بأمٍ" انما للدلالة على انها وَلَدَت واحسنت تربيتهم، فلا تنسَ اوجاع امك من اجلك فهي جديرة بالاكرام. وتَذَكَّر انك منها ولدت (بن سيراخ 3). اما كلمة: الأب، فمدلولها أنه أبٌ لاولاد أنجبهم. وكلمة الأبن تفترض أن له اباً.

     فالأب والأم يشتركان بالخلق مع اللـه بصيغة ما، بالانجاب بعهد مقدس يبرمانه امام الكنيسة فيصبح سراً مقدساً غير قابل الانفكاك، سوى في حالة وفاة احد الطرفين. وكما أهتم القديس يوسف بالرب يسوع، وكان الأب المثالي لكل الآباء، كذلك على أي أبٍ أن ينهج نهجه كي تكون صفة أبوته مطابقة تماماً لصفات مار يوسف رب العائلة المقدسة الذي سهِرَ على يسوع وربّاه مهتماً بمعيشته عاملاً كدوداً ليحصل على قوته اليومي بعزٍ وكرامة. لا يُثـقِّل على احد، زائداً، سهره عليه لينمو بالقامة والنعمة والحكمة امام اللـه والناس (متى  2/ 4). وبالمقابل على الابناء على مثال يسوع، الاكرام المطلق للأبوين بكل الاتجاهات.

      إن مكانة الأب والأم من حيث التقدير والاحترام والطاعة والتبجيل، مفروضة مباشرة من منطلق وصايا اللـه العشرَ والكتاب المقدس، ومدلولها انه من يكرم الأب والأم يعني أنه يكرم اللـه. ولما شرّع يسوع محبة الاعداء، فبأولى حجة محبة الوالدين (لوقا 6/ 27، متى 5/ 43) فأينكم ايها الابناء من وصايا اللـه والكتاب المقدس؟ يقول: من يكرم اباه وامه يسجّل اجراً عند اللـه وتتضاعف مكافأته (متى 6/ 23)، ومن يُغضِب الأب يلعنه الرب ومن يسهب في اكرام الوالدين يباركه اللـه (بن سيراخ 3).

     كم كنت اتمنى... والأمر مستحيل، ان يعود والداي الى الحياة لكي أُضيف على ما قدّمتُهُ لهما من الاكرام واعوّض ما قد فاتني من السهر عليهما فيما مضى لأنال المزيد من بركتيهما اللتين تطيل الحياة وتبعد الويلات.

فيا أيها الابناء ذكوراً واناثاً الذين حالفهم الحظ بأبٍ وأمٍ عائشين، باركوا آباءكم وامهاتكم وصلوا لاجلهما، لانهما صانوكم وربوكم لتصبحوا بدوركم آباءَ وامهات، كي يكرمكم أبناؤكم مستقبلاً ويكيلوا لكم بمكيالكم لابائكم. وانتن ايتها النساء باركن عيد ازواجكن بقبلة مقدسة علامة احترامكم ومحبتكم التي تدل على الاصالة المسيحية (رومية 16/ 16) ودمتم ايها الأباء بطول البقاء. وكل عام وانتم بمليون خير.

الاحتفال بأنتهاء الشهر المريمي في كاتدرائية مار بطرس الكلدانية

      احتفلت كاتدرائية مار بطرس الكلدانية في سان دييگو يوم الخميس 31 آيار 2007 بمراسيم انتهاء الشهر المريمي. بعد الاحتفال بالقداس الالهي وتقبيل صورة العذراء، خرج الشعب بالزياح نحو المغارة وهو يتلو صلاة الوردية بالتناوب بين الاخويات يتقدمتهم جوق الشمامسة ثم اخوية قلب يسوع واخوية مار انطونيوس والاخوية المريمية. وبعدها رُتلت الالحان والصلوات الخاصة بأمنا البتول. في الختام طلب الأب ميخائيل بزي من الحاضرين صغاراً وكباراً ان يرفعوا دُعاءَهم وصلاتهم بكل حرارة الى أُمنا العذراء كي تنظر بعين الرحمة والرأفة الى عراقنا المتألم وشعبنا المسيحي المنكوب، مردداً هذه الصلاة: "بأسم الثالوث المسجود- اله واحد معبود- نمدح مريم قدس الاقداس- ست الملائكة والناس…".

St. Peter Chaldean Choir @ Disneyland

If you have been dreaming a little too much, then you just missed a fun-filled, wild and
adventurous magical day!!! St. Peter Chaldean Cathedral Choir enjoyed going on a trip to Disneyland on Wednesday, May 30, 2007. The group had a wonderful time from beginning to end with non-stop fun. The day began with a prayer, followed by a delicious breakfast, then jokes, tasty snacks, exciting rides, mouth-watering lunch, even more rides, shopping, music and singing and last but not least, the day ended with praying the Rosary and thanking God for the safe trip back home.

St. Peter Chaldean Choir would like to especially thank those who have joined their group recently and would like to extend the invitation for those who are interested in joining as this is a great opportunity to serve God and your Church•
