Immar Ly ‘Edta…

A Subtle Poem and an Inspiring Doctrine

A popular hymn, “’Immar Ly ‘Edta,” chanted during the liturgical season of the Sanctification of the Church, which is now occurring, is so rich with exquisite poetry and solid doctrine as to deserve the best of our attention and at least a basic comment.

The text: Immar Ly ‘Edta

Tell me, O church, where do you wish me to build you?

Shall I build you upon the sun?

No, no, for it is said in the Scriptures,

“The rays of the sun are darkened.” (Joel 2:10)

Tell me, O church, where do you wish me to build you?

Shall I build you upon the moon?

No, no, for it is said in the Scriptures,

“The moon does not show forth its light.” (Isaiah 13:10)

Tell me, O church, where do you wish me to build you?

Shall I build you upon the stars?

No, no, for it is said in the Scriptures,

“The stars fall like leaves.” (Isaiah 34:4)

Tell me, O church, where do you wish me to build you?

Shall I build you upon the mountains?

No, no, for it is said in the Scriptures,

“The mountains melt like wax.” (Psalms 97:5)

Tell me, O church, where do you wish me to build you?

Shall I build you upon the rock?

Yes, yes, for it is said in the Scriptures,

“Upon the rock I will build my Church.” (Matthew 16:18)

In order to grasp the basic meaning of the hymn we ought to understand, first of all, who are the interlocutors?  Who are those speaking?

a) Who is talking to the Church?

- Is it Christ who is asking the Church: where she wants to be build?

* But then, how would he need to make an inquiry, and finally rely on the reported reference to the Scriptures in the fifth verse? Christ should not need that at all, because he is the Author of that Scripture!

- Is he the poet, the author of the hymn?

* It cannot be, because to build a church one must receive a mandate from God, not to be a poet only.

- Indeed, it must be someone who has the mandate from God to build a church, according to the divinely inspired prescriptions. Therefore, the interlocutor or speaker must be a shepherd, entrusted with the mission of building the Church, or a church that embodies the Church.

b) Who is the addressee of the discourse?

- Is the other side of the dialogue the Church to be established?

* But the Lord has already established his Church; he is the one who decides where and how to build it; he does not need to ask about it.

- Is it a local church, not yet fully established, but in need of becoming established and incorporated into the Ecclesiastic Body of the Lord, therefore expressing her compliance with the plan of the Lord?

- Indeed, this hymn is about a shepherd talking to a local church that is to be fashioned according to the model established by the Lord for his Church.

c) What are: the sun, moon, stars, and mountains?

- We may follow the style of poetry and interpret them as: earthly intellectual enlightenment (the sun), sensual fantasies (the moon), vain glories (the stars), and mighty power (the mountains). The church must reject to be built on such worldly foundations; she must be established upon the Rock which is the Faith of Simon Bar Yawna, sustained with the divine promises.

The Annual Bishop Banquet
The First 5 Years of our Diocese

Over five hundred faithful from around the Diocese of St. Peter the
Apostle for Chaldeans and Assyrians joined their Bishop, Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo, as well as Bishop Mar Bawai Soro and many priests for the Fifth Annual Bishop's Banquet at St. Peter’s Hall on October 20, 2007. The event was very well organized, beginning with a welcome speech
to all those who attended, by
Shamasha Aziz Razoky, Chairman of the Diocesan Advisory Council (from St. Peter Chaldean Cathedral, El Cajon),
welcoming especially our dear Chaldean and Assyrian brothers and sisters who had flown in to San Diego to attend this event. He also gave special thanks to all those who worked hard to put this remarkable event together, especially the Hall’s owner, and to those who decorated and videotaped the event at no cost, and to our dear advertisers who
contributed toward the book that was published especially for this occasion. And to all the
wonderful community members who continuously support their Diocese with their generous
donations and loans and to those who donated the raffle prizes. God bless them all.

There were many distinguished state and city officials, among them was Senator Wadie Deddeh.

Following the welcome speech there were comments from Dr. Raymond George (St. Thomas Assyrian Chaldean Church, Turlock- visit our websites for his speech), and Shamasha Bassam Aboona (St. Barbara Chaldean Mission, Las Vegas), and most importantly Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo, and Mar Bawai Soro’s speeches who both spoke inspiringly about the unity of the Church of the East.

Mar Sarhad Yawsip gave a sincere welcome to the faithful who came with Mar Bawai to attend this special Annual Dinner, and challenged Chaldeans and Assyrians to compete in showing brotherhood and love for one another, and spoke happily and proudly about the fruits of what he planted and planned during the first five years of the Diocese (visit www.kaldaya.net and www.kaldu.org for a
complete video of his speech and more).

The night was alive with our beloved singer Sawsan Kizy who added a joyful scent to the atmosphere and energized the people to dance and enjoy the party. The night concluded with achievement medals being presented to four members from our parishes as listed below, in
recognition of their services for their Church & community. (see next page)

The following morning, October 21, 2007, Mar Sarhad Yawsip and Mar Bawai attended both Sunday Masses at
St. Peter Chaldean Cathedral, each speaking, with great insight and clarity, regarding the brotherhood of Chaldeans and Assyrians, and the unity of the Church of the East. Sermon from the English Mass, and Sermon from the Chaldean Mass can be viewed on our websites: www.kaldu.org and www.kaldaya.net

Mr. Tony Oshana

Recognized

as the Chaldean Community Person of the Year 2007 in the Field of Philanthropy

Whereas Tony was born in Dehouk on April 13, 1966. Since childhood, he was very ambitious and looked for a bright future in his life. His banner was that “a ladder is not meant to sit on, but to climb UP.” Being an AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) person, he took giant steps in his life without fear and lots of courage. At the age of 13, he left Iraq for Vienna and headed to Athens, Greece. After three years, his dream came through, and he was granted a refuge visa to come to America, the Country of his dreams. On November 18, 1984, he arrived in Redding, Pennsylvania and worked for a company owned by an Italian family who embraced him as a member of their family. He finished his high school education and remained with this family for eight years. From there he left for Anaheim, California, where he joined forces with his brother, George Oshana, in the auto glass business. It was George who taught Tony the auto glass trade. His perseverance and determination for success motivated him in July of 1989 to open two auto glass locations proved to be very successful under his management.

Whereas  Tony married his cousin, Nina, on April 24, 1993. The couple lived in Anaheim, where they established their first Low Price Auto Glass Corporation that proved to be extremely successful and profitable. Nina stood by Tony like a tower of strength in managing the daily affairs of their business. Later, they moved to Fresno, California in May of 1994, after selling their business in Anaheim. They immediately opened two auto glass locations, which became, until today, their two prime profitable locations. From then on, they expanded their business by opening more than 100 other locations of Low Price Auto Glass in 40 (forty) states. I guess the old saying is true that “behind every successful man, there is a great woman.”

Whereas Tony had made frequent visits to San Diego. He invested in real estate both in Fresno and San Diego. He and his wife immediately realized that their hearts were in San Diego to be close to their Chaldean Church and community. Finally, they moved to San Diego in August of 2002, and decided to be active in their Chaldean Church and community. While here, Tony enrolled at Cuyamaca College for two courses in Business Management and English. He also ventured in the limousine business known as “Flamingo Limousine.” In addition, he opened two auto glass locations. In October of 2006, the couple, opened up “Ishtar Jewelry” with Mazin Toma to serve the jewelry needs of the community. Tony and Nina, with their two daughters and one son, are extremely happy to be living in San Diego, close to their Chaldean Church, their beloved bishop, dear priests, and friends.

Therefore, it has been resolved by the Awarding Committee of the Chaldean Catholic Diocese of St. Peter the Apostle to be recognized as the Chaldean Community Person of the Year 2007 in the Field of Philanthropy.

Youth in Action

Chaldean Day Festival at Cuyamaca College

The Annual Chaldean Day Festival at Cuyamaca College on October 9th, 2007 was quite a success! The event was hosted by the Student Affairs Office and the associated
students of Cuyamaca College, with the cooperation of Dr. Sami Jihad.

The purpose of the occasion was to reflect on the rich traditions, customs, and culture of the Chaldeans. The event was attended by His Excellency, Bishop Sarhad Yawsip Jammo and Father Michael Bazzi of St. Peter Chaldean Catholic Cathedral, and Father Emad Al-Sheikh of the Syriac Catholic Church. Also in attendance were the President and Vice President of Cuyamaca College and many other staff and faculty that were present during the time of the festival.

The event was extremely successful, mostly because of the delicious Chaldean food that was enjoyed by everyone, in addition to the energetic sound of Chaldean music, where many students performed their famous native Chaldean dance.

Six Flags Magic Mountain Theme Park

From time to time, Breath of Life Youth Group has a variety of outings for the youth who are consistently involved in the weekly meetings held at Saint Michael Chaldean Parish. On October 21st, 2007, a bus of fifty people from the group went on a trip to Six Flags-Magic Mountain Theme Park. The bus left from Saint Peter Cathedral at 6:30am and arrived back at 9:00pm. With the enormous rollercoaster rides and different sorts of arcade games, the group had a fun-filled experience.

Rosary Prayer for the San Diego Wildfires

The fires that surrounded San Diego County in the week of October 21st caused much despair and heartache among the communities in the affected and unaffected areas. On October 24th, 2007 many members from the youth group joined in for a Rosary prayer at the Good Samaritan Retirement Home Chapel. It is amazing and very influential to see the youth come together to support all of those who were affected by the tragedy. We encourage our community to be good neighbors to all of the victims of the wildfires, for it is truly time for us to act! May God bless us all and keep us safe, especially in disasters such as these.

Movie Night at Saint Michael Parish

On Friday October 26th, 2007 there was a “Movie Night” fundraiser at Saint Michael Parish Hall. About 40 youth came and watched “The Nightmare before Christmas.” The donation charge was 5 dollars and the event included a bakery sale. The baked goods and candy were brought by the people who attended the gathering. Overall, it was a good night for everyone who was present and a great change of atmosphere from the wildfires that were
happening during that week.

New Pro-Life Movie: Bella

Many are astounded by the new pro-life movie, Bella, which came out in theaters on
Friday, October 26th, 2007. About 30 youth and many community members were offered free tickets to see the movie on Sunday, October 28th at the Regal Theatre inside of
Parkway Plaza Mall. With an extremely Catholic cast and director, the motion picture has been rated a “must see” on many movie rating websites and newspapers. We encourage all our Chaldean families to watch this production, which is against abortion.
