During his lecture at the Chaldean Club in Sweden, His Excellency, Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo focused on language as he spoke to the Chaldeans present. Our language is not the Syriac language, our mother tongue is the Chaldean language. It’s history rests by origin in the Akkadian and Sumerian dialect of Babylon. If we want to preserve our culture, we must teach our mother language. We respect all the other languages of our neighbors, but we are not to confuse ourselves with our neighbors. We are Chaldean and our language is Chaldean and it is our duty to preserve the language of our fathers and mothers.
The Bishop did not preach only in words. He brought with him a complete set of books to teach the Chaldean language. He plans on giving the Chaldeans of Sweden the means to teach their children the Chaldean language of their fathers.
When the angel of the Lord appeared to Mary, he did not greet her in Latin or Greek. He greeted her in the language she could understand and that was the Chaldean, the Aramaic language. This is the language that the Jews brought back with them after their exile in Babylon. This is our treasure and we are to preserve it.
