Prayer Services and Vigils take place at St. Peter Cathedral

After Holy Thursday mass, the faithful of St. Peter Cathedral gathered in the church again after dark to continue their vigil with the Lord. At 8:30pm, His Excellency, Mar Sarhad Yawsip Jammo, read the Gospel of the Passion in the darkened church. With only two candles for light, the faithful stood in darkness as they listened to the Gospel. Following the reading, a prayer service in English was held as it is every year on the night of Holy Thursday. Titled,From the Garden to the Cross, the two-hour prayer service includes a series of reflections of the different characters who were present in the final hours of our Lord’s life. After an introductory Evening Prayer, nine personas are used as lenses to gain insight into the events of our Lord’s passion, death and resurrection. Confession was available throughout the evening in order to accomidate the numerous faithful who take advantage of the penitential spirit of Holy Week.
